In March 2023, Ingrid successfully organized a CEO Management Retreat (a part of Can Tho & Mekong Delta Discovery & Investment Program), facilitating Japanese investors to explore investment opportunities in Can Tho City.
The retreat aimed to assist Japanese investors to explore growth opportunities in Can Tho and Mekong Delta with food-related industry. Additionally, the program promotes cultural experiences, tourism, and international collaboration, positioning Can Tho as a hub for trade, finance, technology, and services.
The program includes meeting with the key government officials from Can Tho City People’s Committee, Can Tho University, Can Tho Promotion Agency, Department of Planning and Investment, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Industry & Trade, and Transportation, and local enterprises.
With the strong local government support we explored win-win business collaborations, implanting Japanese technologies in food processing and harnessing the rich natural resources of the Mekong Delta.
At our CEO Management Retreat, the Japanese delegation uncovered numerous opportunities in Can Tho:
- Visited and engaged in discussions with Caseamex, one of the top 4 seafood exporting enterprises in Can Tho, to explore the potential of utilizing fish skin ingredients from Pangasius for the production of fish skin leather
- Gained insights into the strengths of Can Tho and the Mekong Delta in the food-related industry, including wine ingredients derived from sweet potatoes and rice.
- Explore the rich local culture and landscapes of Can Tho City, immersing in the vibrant atmosphere of the Cai Rang floating market and savoring the diverse flavors of local dishes.
With the new knowledge gained and opportunities discussed, we anticipate the emergence of projects that foster collaboration and mutual development due to the following observations:
Vast growth opportunities in Mekong Delta
The Mekong Delta, a key part of the Southern economic region, marks the final stretch of the Mekong River. Covering nearly 4 million hectares across 13 provinces, including Ho Chi Minh City, it constitutes 13% of Vietnam’s natural area. Home to around 18 million people, or 19% of the national population, this region holds strategic importance, influencing geopolitics, geo-economics, and geo-military aspects for the entire country.
– Advantages in Agricultural & Aquaculture Development : Enriched by the Mekong River, the region’s 2.5 million hectares of fertile land made it the Vietnam’s largest agricultural center, contributing significantly to the country’s food security: 50% of rice output, 65% of aquaculture production, and 70% of fruit production. To increase productivity and quality output, technology and modern hi-tech farming is crucial for the next phase of growth and development. |
– Significant upgrade of Mekong Delta Transportation Infrastructure 2021-2030: In the transportation upgrade plan for 2021-2030, the Mekong Delta aims to construct 760km of new highways by 2030, with an additional 420 km later. The Master Plan, spanning 2021-2030 and extending to 2050, aims to transform the region into a highly developed destination for tourists and investors. By 2030, the seaport system is projected to handle 64-80 million tonnes of commodities with container cargo weighing 600,000-800,000 TEUs. For the aviation sector, Phu Quoc international airport will be the destination hub for tourists. Can Tho international airport is set to be the region’s air logistics hub. |
Can Tho City – The center of industry, commerce and culture of Mekong Delta
Can Tho City, designated as the urban center reporting directly to the Central Government, occupies a strategic position in the heart of the Mekong Delta region. With a vision for 2021-2030 and beyond, it aims to evolve into a smart city, attracting high-quality services and consumption. Can Tho City has prioritized high technology, green economy, sustainability, and climate change investment development in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, seafood, tourism, logistics, and light industry. The city’s appeal, driven by significant investments such as VSIP and its proximity to HCMC (167.31 km), positions it as an attractive destination for collaboration across sectors. |
